We have all experienced the problems encountered when you contact a large institution e.g. bank, utility etc even when making a simple enquiry for someone else – “Sorry, we can only discuss with the person named on the account”, all as a result of the Data Protection Act.
However in the event of incapacity, this “protection” creates a real problem during the period of incapacity – which could be months or even years.
A power of attorney allows you to appoint persons you trust to deal with your affairs in a simple and straight forward manner.
The only alternative is for someone to apply to the courts at considerable cost – in both time and money.
